That’s Mine! by Michel van Zeveren is a lovely, cautionary tale, with bold illustrations that complement the language perfectly.
When the little frog finds an egg, he proclaims, “That’s mine!”, but the snake, the eagle and the lizard also want to lay claim to the egg…until it bounces up and hits the elephant on the head…
He enjoys the way the animals speak; lines such as “Hsss…hsss…hsss…ssssmine,” says the snake are appealing to read as well.
At three-and-a-half, he doesn’t quite understand the message behind the story, but a slightly older child would pick up on that, as well as the humour behind it. However, the language is such that Tiny “reads” this story to himself, and does a pretty good job of remembering all the lines.
