I took the boys for lunch at my parents’ house one day recently. When we’d finished eating, I watched my 72-year-old mother climb up on a stool so she could rat around in the top of her cluttered pantry cupboard.
She wasn’t up there for long before she emerged, triumphantly brandishing a bright yellow rectangle of plastic. “You may as well have these,” she said, climbing down to a more-ladylike level.
I recognised the six bright rectangles from my childhood. They were ice block molds, but they weren’t just any old ice block molds….
After a quick wash at home – these babies haven’t been used in decades – I had a look in the fridge to see what kind of ice blocks we could make. There was half a punnet of blueberries that were looking a little wrinkled, and a small bottle of lemonade, so Tiny and I set to work, making these icy little treats:
It was a very labour-intensive five minutes.
I blitzed the blueberries with a little water (maybe 1-2 T) until they were pulpy, mixed in the lemonade., and poured the mixture into the molds. I added wooden sticks from my dad’s old teaching supplies, and gently carried each tray to the freezer.
Voilà! Blueberry & Lemonade ice blocks. Yum – with the Tiny ‘Tick of Approval’.
Fun with Food
Fun with Food is a way for you to share your foodie (mis)adventures with other people. You don’t have to be a superb cook, or produce Masterchef-quality plates of food; this will be a place to share new and favourite recipes, meal plans, cooking on a budget, lunchbox ideas, new products, kitchen successes and disasters (because we all have those!) and maybe some handy tips for getting fussy kids to eat their dinner!
The linky will open on a Tuesday and stay open for a week, so I hope you’ll share your kitchen adventures, and be inspired by what other people are doing in the heart of their homes.
(By clicking on the button below, you’ll be taken to an external page, where you can enter your link and see who else is linking up. Please take the time to visit them, too!)
